UK: The Office of Rail & Road has approved open access inter-city operator First Hull Trains’ application for track access rights for a further 10 years from 2019. The FirstGroup subsidiary said this would enable it to go ahead with a £68m plan to order five Hitachi electro-diesel multiple-units which had been announced by the operator on September 3. Entering service in 2020, these five-car units would be able to work under the 25 kV 50 Hz electrification on the East Coast Main Line from London King’s Cross and then on diesel power on the unelectrified line to Hull and Beverley, eliminating the current need for extensive diesel operation under the wires.‘The approval of a 10-year track access enables us to deliver our longer term plans, including new bi-mode trains that will be faster than those we operate today’, said Will Dunnett, Managing Director of First Hull Trains on March 23. ‘We will also be able to increase our fleet to five units with more seats on each, meaning a 50% increase in the number of seats for passengers. The ORR’s approval of our track access until 2029 secures the long term future of First Hull Trains, whilst at the same time safeguards and enhances the region’s rail connectivity to the capital.’The operator is also to spend £0·5m to enhance its current fleet of Alstom Class 180 DMUs, installing onboard CCTV and rolling out screens providing real-time train running information. FirstGroup expects to hear later this year the outcome of its separate application for paths to operate five trains/day each way between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh, designed to compete with low-cost airlines.
Newly appointed National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang, says the Government will continue to provide the necessary resources to bolster the capabilities of the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF).JDF must remain relevant in safeguarding JamaicaChang, in a recent interview with the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) said the objective is to ensure the JDF remains relevant in safeguarding Jamaica’s borders as well as providing training for at-risk youth in a wide range of skill areas.“The JDF does very well with the resources they have, but certainly need more. The JDF is the primary agency for air/sea rescue missions and to safeguard our coastal waters, and resources in that area have been depleted over the years. We have taken steps to restore capacity and they may still need more support,” Chang said.Impressed with training, but more neededThe Minister said he is “very impressed” with the JDF’s training activities, but noted that additional support will allow the Force to strengthen offerings and create a wider pool of highly skilled individuals that can make a positive contribution to the Jamaican economy.Chang spoke following a tour of facilities at the JDF’s headquarters – Up Park Camp, that was led by Chief of Defense Staff, Major General Rocky Meade.Chang said the meetings and the tour were very informative. He commended the JDF for displaying high standards in carrying out its programs and projects.Recruiting inner city youth“They have taken on the mission outlined by the Prime Minister very seriously and they have taken on a group of young men from inner-city areas through the National Service Corps (NSC). I was quite impressed with the work being done,” he said.“It is designated that, this year, the NSC will expand its numbers, so there have been resources allocated in this Budget to give the it additional capacity required,” he pointed out, noting that the NSC has become a model locally and internationally. For his part, Major General Meade said the Government continues to provide “tremendous support” to the JDF, “and I can’t complain.”

Contrary to widespread reports, the Federal Government has clarified that restrictions on contact sports, including football, remain in place putting paid to hopes of an imminent return of professional football in Nigeria. The PTF last week released guidelines for the phase three of eased lockdown which granted permission for resumption of “sporting leagues” without fans, which many interpreted as green lighting the return of football.“Restriction is removed on outdoor communal (non-contact) sports and use of recreational parks for supervised physical exercise; and sporting leagues to resume with no fans in stadiums and with necessary NPIs to be directed by the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth Development and the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control),” the guideline stated. However, National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 Dr Sani Aliyu, explained at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, that the guidelines covered only non-contact sports while restrictions on contact sports remain in place.“I’m a football fan, but sadly, we have not allowed contact sports at the moment,” Dr Aliyu clarified.“We have only allowed non-contact sports, and so, football is not included.“All those football fans, it’s not yet time, but we are looking at this, and we will continue relaxing when the time comes and it is safe to do so,” Aliyu said. The development is sure to throw a spanner in the works for Nigeria Professional Football League clubs who had on the strength of the earlier guidelines, reconvened players and started preparations for preseason training in anticipation of the new season. The Nigeria Football Federation had set September/October kick off date for the 2020-21 season for all domestic leagues but that appears unlikely in light of recent developments. The League Management Company, organisers of the NPFL, had primed clubs to start preparations ahead of the new season by providing a schedule for clubs to fulfil their licensing obligations, a prerequisite for participating in the incoming season. It is not clear if the PTF’s stance materially affects the LMC’s preparations for the 2020-21 season but the Sports Ministry has already warned that clubs which fail to adhere to the licencing demands will not be allowed to compete in the league whenever it kicks off.RelatedFootball Returns Without Fans As FG Lifts BanSeptember 4, 2020In “Featured”Coronavirus: Sports Return Uncertain As PTF Boss Takes Jibe At NPFLJune 12, 2020In “Featured”Sports Ministry Gives Conditions For Domestic LeaguesSeptember 6, 2020In “Featured”
