Preserve Britain as ‘legal hub’, says CityUK

first_imgNearly a quarter of workers in the EU’s legal and accounting sectors are based in Britain and generate more than £15 billion a year in taxes, according to a report that calls on Britain’s leading position as a legal hub to be retained. The report, by professional services lobby group TheCityUK, says that the two sectors generated £15.5bn in tax in 2015/16 – £6.4bn directly levied on the businesses and £9.1bn through payrolls and VAT. According to the report, ‘Total Tax Contribution Study for UK legal and accounting activities’, produced by PwC, the sectors collectively employ 693,000 people across the UK (23% of all EU employees). The report does not give separate figures for the legal profession however a previous report by the group in February this year counted 311,000 people employed in legal services across the country. The report says Britain has a ‘premier position as a legal and accounting services employer’ and is ahead of Germany (21% of all EU workers), France (10%), Spain (8%) and Italy (7%).Miles Celic, chief executive at TheCityUK, said the two sectors are an ‘essential part of the world-leading financial and professional services ecosystem’.‘The UK is the leading global hub for legal and accounting expertise and it is vital that we not only preserve that, but we continue to grow it,’ he added.Earlier this month TheCityUK suggested appointing ‘industry champions’ to promote the rule of law to Whitehall so that a ‘strong, clear and consistent’ system of law will be kept after Britain leaves the EU.last_img read more

Partnership model declines in growing legal services market

first_imgThe traditional partnership model of legal practice has declined dramatically with almost half of all firms now incorporated companies, according to a long-running survey of the sector published today. The ninth annual UK Legal Services Market Report by IRN Research also notes that 1,300 of England and Wales 10,000 law firms are now operating as alternative business structures. Despite the impact of government reforms to the personal injury sector and concerns about the impact of Brexit, the survey finds the sector in robust health, generating £35.1bn across the UK in 2018. That was 6.3% up on the previous year, or 3.7% taking inflation into account. In 2019 it is forecast to grow by  5.4% at current prices. Much of the growth, however, comes from the top 100 firms which continue to outperform the overall market. The is is partly due to acquisitions boosting overall revenue and partly due to the fact that most of their work is in the corporate sector which is performing better than most consumer law sectors. The picture is less bright in the personal injury/accident/medical negligence sector, which accounts for 11% of the UK market. According to the research fewer than half of practitioners expect revenue to grow in the next 12 months. The increase in the small claims limit, in April 2020, will hit the market by pushing more consumers towards ‘DIY law’.Elsewhere, the research predicts downward pressures on fees due to more solicitors working freelance or in unregulated practices. It notes ‘concerns that less regulation of these new suppliers could lower standards’.last_img read more

Gilas ‘to do everything’ to have Clarkson in FIBA

first_imgCleveland Cavaliers guard Jordan Clarkson first represented the Philippines during the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. POC-PSC MEDIA GROUP MANILA – The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) plans to do everything to have Cleveland Cavaliers guard Jordan Clarkson available for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup slated from Aug. 31 to Sept. 15 in China.SBP president Al Panlilio said in an interview with Agence France-Presse that they will once again try to convince FIBA to allow the Filipino-American Clarkson to play as a Filipino citizen.“We have been trying to convince or discuss the matter with FIBA,” Panlilio said. “Everyone is working on the matter and we will do everything we can to make it happen.”He added: “Based on our constitution, he is Filipino. He has a passport. But he got it after he was 16 years old.” Clarkson, in an Instagram post, also showed interest to suit up for the national men’s basketball team in the FIBA World Cup, which he said will be a dream come true for him.“Congrats to my bros and the country such a honor for the country, qualifying for the world cup, so hyped!!! hope to see you guys in China!!!” said Clarkson, currently the leading scorer of the slumping Cavaliers in NBA.Clarkson first represented the Philippines during the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia but the World Cup operates under FIBA rules which could classify him as “naturalized” player after obtaining his Filipino passport after the age of 16.FIBA also restricts each team to one “naturalized” player, meaning Gilas head coach Joseller “Yeng” Guiao will have to choose between Clarkson and naturalized center Andray Blatche for the FIBA World Cup.Gilas Pilipinas reached its second consecutive FIBA World Cup appearance after finishing as the best fourth placer during the year-long Asian qualifier, that concluded last Sunday.“It’s been a journey and it’s been quite difficult because you know we had a major issue with the Australian incident, the brawl,” Panlilio said. “The stars really had to align for us…We are very happy and proud to be back in the World Cup.”/PNlast_img read more

It’ll be tough for Dawgs to beat USC for top receiver

first_imgFour-star wide receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) committed to USC just over a month ago. However, anybody that follows football recruiting knows that committing doesn’t necessarily mark the end of a top football prospect’s recruitment as college football coaches will continue trying to reel in the top players. That’s not necessarily the case though for Imatorbhebhe.Josh ImatorbhebheJosh Imatorbhebhe“I feel like I have to initiate the contact for them to start talking to me,” Imatorbhebhe said of other programs that recruited him prior to his announcement. “A lot of people thought I was done after I committed. People still send graphics from Alabama, South Carolina and Ohio State, but nothing like serious. Stanford is still talking to me. Auburn was on me really hard, but I guess they were sad I committed and I haven’t heard from then since.”USC set the bar high for what a school needs to have in order to flip his commitment.“I love USC, and until somebody can come close in my mind to what they are, I don’t know,” Imatorbhebhe said. “If they want to try to, they can try, but right now USC is number one for me.”If schools such as Georgia – who offered him a scholarship before his commitment – continue to recruit him, Imatorbhebhe will entertain them.“I would be polite,” Imatorbhebhe said. “I’m committed, but I’m always making sure I’m making the right decision. Like I said, until somebody can prove they are better than the place I am committed to now, I’m resting easy.”So what made USC the right choice for the Rivals250 member?“It’s a combination of everything. It’s not really to me about what’s right with USC. I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with USC and there is nothing. The only thing is the distance. Everything else is great. It has great weather. It’s a great location. There is a lot of stuff to do, great football, great tradition, great education. It’s like ‘Wow, what is wrong with this place?’ “Imatorbhebhe planned a trip out west to Southern Cal before he heads north to Oregon for The Opening. He’s going there on a mission.“First of all, I want to prove to myself that I’m as good as I want to be and also prove to everybody else that they have been sleeping on me and that I’m one of the best receivers in the country,” Imatorbhebhe said.Dan McDonald writes for UGASports.comlast_img read more

How Dak Prescott fell from Heisman Trophy front-runner

first_imgSTARKVILLE Dak Prescott didn’t attend practice on Saturday. For the majority of Mississippi State’s season, many expected a trip to New York City to cause the absence. Instead, Prescott was in Starkville attending his graduation.Prescott’s performance through the Bulldogs’ first six games thrust him into the Heisman Trophy discussion. Bovada Sportsbook listed him as the favorite on Oct. 14 with 9/4 odds after he guided the Bulldogs to three straight victories over top 10 opponents and a No. 1 ranking.Prescott threw for 14 touchdowns compared to four interceptions in leading Mississippi State (10-2, 6-2 SEC) to a 6-0 start. The second half of the season brought struggles for the quarterback in his first full season as MSU’s starter.“Thinking back on it, in all the film I watched, I didn’t get the feeling that Dak Prescott regressed in the second half of the year,” ESPN analysts Jesse Palmer said. “I think the competition was a little bit different in the second half of the year.”Prescott finished eighth in the Heisman voting. It’s the best finish of any Bulldog in program history.Prescott threw 10 touchdowns along with six interceptions during the second half of the season. As Mississippi State hit the heart of the SEC schedule, Prescott played without his favorite target in Jameon Lewis. Lewis never found the chemistry he shared with Prescott since suffering a cracked fibula against LSU on Sept. 20. Prescott wasn’t completely healthy, either. He played with a foot injury throughout the season. Opponents also began forcing Prescott to pass.Despite steamrolling through three top-10 teams, Prescott’s toughest tests came at the end of the season.“Arkansas and Alabama whipped them up front. They were equipped with their defensive lines,” Palmer said. “Ole Miss as well. I don’t think it was so much of a schematic thing. I think it was more of a personnel thing.”The three games are the only contests in which Mississippi State didn’t rush for at least 220 yards. The Bulldogs turned in efforts of 128 (Arkansas), 138 (Alabama) and 163 (Ole Miss) in the defeats. They coincide with Prescott’s worst outings. He threw four touchdowns and five interceptions. In MSU’s 10 wins, it averaged 244 yards on the ground. Prescott threw for 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.“When Mississippi State became one dimensional in some of those games, especially in the Alabama game, when they’re not physical at the point of attack and they become one-dimensional,” Palmer said. “Then they become much easier to stop.”It remains to be seen if his second-half struggles will affect his draft stock. CBS Sports ranks Prescott as a second–round pick for the 2015 NFL Draft. He’s ranked fourth among quarterbacks, behind Heisman Trophy winner and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, Florida State’s Jameis Winston and UCLA Brett Hundley. All three are expected to declare. Only Michigan State’s Connor Cook ranks higher among quarterbacks in the 2016 class, according to CBS.“Over the second half, Dak showed what we already knew. Extremely talented, but could use another year of seasoning before he’s ready for what the NFL will throw at him,” CBS Sports draft analyst Dane Brugler said.Prescott already filed paperwork with the league to request a draft grade. The grade doesn’t tie him to the NFL but is used to help inform underclassmen when making the decision whether or not to leave early.Palmer pointed to decision-making and accuracy as areas Prescott needs to improve. If he returns, Prescott will be slated as the league’s best quarterback. But MSU’s offensive line loses three starters, Lewis graduates, and a report came out Saturday that coach Dan Mullen could be a leading candidate to fill the coaching vacancy at Michigan, according to 2015 Heisman discussion will begin as soon as Prescott steps on the field next August.“His path to winning it,” Palmer said, “is actually going to be more difficult next year than it was this season.” Contact Michael Bonner at (601) 961-7289 or Follow @MikeBBonner on Twitter.last_img read more
